Promotion of Open Document Format (ODF)
Open Document Format (ODF, ISO/IEC 26300, full name: OASIS Open Document Format for Office Applications) is a file format used for office electronic documents, such as spreadsheets, charts, presentations, and word processing.
Reminder: Do not produce ODF documents by exporting/converting from commercial editing software, to avoid layout inconsistencies or files failing to open. Instead, use the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) ODF Application Tools or LibreOffice to open commercial-format documents and then save them as ODF.
Common Types of Open Document Formats:
- Writer (.odt): Compatible with Word; a word processor for producing professional documents, reports, newsletters, and booklets.
- Calc (.ods): Compatible with Excel; a spreadsheet tool to quickly and clearly calculate, analyze, and display data.
- Impress (.odp): Compatible with PowerPoint; used to create multimedia presentations.
- Draw (.odg): Used to draw 2D, 3D, and even special-effect graphics. Can export to BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF formats.
- Base (.odb): Provides a database application design interface. Supports popular database software such as MySQL/MariaDB, Adabas D, MS Access, and PostgreSQL.
- PDF (.pdf): Portable Document Format that ensures consistent presentation across different devices, hardware, or operating systems.
Internal Promotion Procedures:
- Websites and systems should support ODF format for downloadable/exportable editable documents; non-editable documents should use PDF format.
- Attachments of electronic official documents that are editable must use the ODF format.
- Administrative operations within the institution should circulate documents using ODF.
